Fleurieu Peninsula travel guide

We quickly fell in love with South Australia after travelling around the Flinder Rangers. After spending a considerable amount of time in the Australian outback we were craving some time by the ocean and the Fleurieu Peninsula delivered what we needed. From dramatic coastal drives to quiet beaches, historic towns, world-class wineries and much more.

ATTRACTIONS: WHAT TO SEE AND WHERE

What we loved most about the Fleurieu Peninsula was that there is so much to see and do. Here are a few of our favourite things to do while in the area!

Seaside beauty of Port Elliot: This charming coastal town boasts sandy shores and rugged cliffs, perfect for beach days, fishing, shopping and wandering the cute little streets. Don't forget to explore the iconic Port Elliot Jetty, a photographer's dream during sunrise or sunset and the FAMOUS Port Elliot Bakery which has a doughnut and pie of the month YUM!!!

Wine Tasting in McLaren Vale: This renowned wine region is a wino’s dream. Indulge at the cellar door tastings, surrounded by rolling vineyards. World-class Shiraz, distilleries and breweries litter the area.

Encounter Wildlife at Deep Creek Conservation Park: The untouched beauty of Deep Creek Conservation Park offers hiking, camping, 4WDing, wildlife and little coves. With its sweeping views of the Southern Ocean and an abundance of native flora and fauna. Keep your eyes peeled for kangaroos, echidnas, and a myriad of bird species.

Scenic Drive along the Coast: For a more relaxed adventure, hop in your car and embark on a scenic drive along the coast. Wind your way through picturesque seaside villages, stopping at viewpoints that offer panoramic vistas of the sparkling waters and dramatic cliffs. Notable towns include Port Elliot, Victor Harbour, Rapid Bay, Aldinga Beach, Sellick Beach and McLaren Vale.

Where to camp:

By far our favourite low-cost camping in this area is Rapid Bay. For $25.00 per night, you can camp right on the beach or further back on the grass. There are flushing toilets, bins, direct beach and jetty access. This is a great base for exploring the area.

BIG4 Breeze Holiday Parks - Port Elliot is perfectly situated between two beaches and an easy walk into town. The park has all the facilities you would want and has nice grassy and shady sites for roughly $42.00 per night unpowered.

Deep Creek National Park, Cobbler Hill is a stunning little campground with compositing toilets, private sites, beautiful views, and wildlife and is a great starting point for many hikes. Vehicle entry into the national park is $13.00 per vehicle and camping for $25.00 per night.

Breakaway Farm Stay is a much more affordable option than staying in Victor Harbour caravan parks. Camping for $25.00 per night with hot showers, flushing toilets, camp kitchen, fire pit and surrounded by animals.

This is just a glimpse of the things to do and see along the Fleurieu Peninsula. You should allow 7-10 days to thoroughly explore this beautiful area but can cover a lot in 3-5 days if time does not allow. After the Fleurieu Peninsula be sure to spend some time in Adelaide, Adelaide Hills or venture further to the Limestone Coast.
