Megan’s Favourite travel destination:

With having traveled to so many incredible destinations, it can sometimes be difficult to pick a favourite. For me though, it is quite easy.

I first thought of traveling to Mexico after I had lived and worked in Europe for two years, I was searching for somewhere I knew little about but somewhere that had so much to offer. I started researching a few ‘must visit’ places and soon realised that Mexico had everything I love about travel. The food (tick), beaches (tick), adventure packed (tick), tequila (tick), stunning colonial towns (tick) and culture (tick). What more could you want?!!

I was a little apprehensive as with all countries, Mexico did have a bad wrap for being dangerous due to conflict with cartels, spring break and all inclusive holiday packages. My plan was to venture slightly off the well-trodden gringo track and that is where I fell in love with Mexico!!!

My top five favourite places:

#1 - Cenotes

I spent a few days exploring the less populated cenotes around Merida, Yucatán and it was absolutely worth the overnight bus journey.

#2- Isla Holbox

Slowing things down with a few days on the stunning island of Holbox, Quintana Roo. Nothing but sunshine, hammocks, stunning sunsets and fish tacos.

#3- San Cristobal de las Casas

The breathtaking colour and charm of San Cristobel, Chiapas colonial streets, where you can spend days wandering around. The best bustling markets I experience in Mexico. Where nights out can easily turn into drunken adventures.

#4- Mazunte

Relaxing days spent walking around the little hippy town of Mazunte, Oaxaca. Where you can stay in cute little beach shacks right on the beach and view the most epic sunsets from Punta Cometa.

#5- Tulum

No trip would be complete without some wild nights in Tumul, Quintana Ro followed by relaxing days riding to cenotes and nearby Tulum Archaelogical Zone.

#6 (because I can’t stop at 5) - Palenque

Stop and explore the incredible rainforest town of Palenque, Chiapas. A day well spent exploring the beautiful Agua Azul and Palenque ruins.

By the end Mexico filled my heart and stomach!!! It was incredibly hard to leave. One thing I know is that there is still plenty more to see which means I will definitely have to go back!!!
